NORDEN LIGHT was a melodic hard rock/metal band formed by Christer Mentzer and Michael von Knorring in the mid-80s. The group began under the name MENTZER until their manager Börje Forsberg suggested that they change to the current name. NORDEN LIGHT had success in both Europe and Japan. They released an album on Sonet Records in 1987, 'Shadows from the Wilderness' and recorded two tracks (as MENTZER) for the compilation album ' Scandinavian Metal Attack II (1984)'. They also appeared with the song "No Escape" in the Italian film Opera from 1987. NORDEN LIGHT drummer Michael Van Knorring later joined YNGWIE MALMSTEEN. The drummer would later unite with Italian frontman Chris Heaven for a 2002 band called EDGE OF TIME. Info from Janne Stark's EncyclopediaIn the early 80s Chris lead the band Mentzer that, beside some demos, recorded two tracks for the compilation 'Scandinavian Metal Attack II (1984)'. Besides Christer and Johan the band then consisted of former Snowstorm drummer Torben Ferm and bassist Nalle Oskarsson. Chris then joined Silver Mountain, sang on the album 'Universe' and did a tour in Japan with the band where he almost cut a deal for his own band. After Jonas Hansson moved to the US, Chris formed Norden Light. The album may not be considered a milestone, but it's well worth investing in. The style is similar to the Silver Mountain album, but the old Mentzer material is heavier. In 1988 the band was going to London to record the second album, but bad economics put a halt to the plans. Unfortunately the band foldd around 1989. Von Knorring was later with Yngwie Malmsteen, but had to quit due to hearing problems. Silver Mountain made a reunion show and video in 2010, where Menzter, now residing in Norway, participated. Mentzer also recorded an album with Chicago/Santana style band Pyramid in 1978. Norden Light reunited in 2012, but sadly split in 2013 before even playing together.
